Newborn HDC Hat - Free, Easy Crochet Pattern for Beginners!

How to Make the Half Double Crochet Beanie!

Baby hats are the cutest thing in the world. Opinionated? Yes. But, they are soft, warm little things and they take barely any time or yarn. If you or someone you know are expecting you just have to make one. It was my first project ever for my "little bean" (he is 9 now and has an impressive collection of hats).

A picture? Ok...if you insist!

Ok. I am back on focus! The hat!! This hat is a fast and easy pattern that you can literally dress up in any way! You can make this into a character, add a button or bow. Make it a little longer and flip the brim. (Yes, the brimmed beanie pattern is on the way. Lots of request after the one I shared. Just waiting for the sunshine).

The pattern is newborn to 3 months size. Go up to a hook size if you want it to fit 3-6 months!

I used Lion Brand Vannas Choice. But, any Size 4 Medium Weight Worsted Yarn is fine. I talk about yarn choices and how they effect the hat in the video. Also, I discuss how to measure before you add length to be sure that you will end up with the right size! Come visit me on youtube!

Now what you will need:

Materials:
1 Skein Size 4 Worsted or Aran Weight Yarn (Red Heart Super Saver or Vanna's Choice work well!)
1 Size I/9 5.5mm Crochet Hook
1 Yarn Needle
1 Scissors

Cute and SIMPLE Fingerless Glove Pattern

I took quite the crochet-vacation. Every time I do I come back full of vim and vigor, revving to get back at my hooks. As a starter project, I am making a little something for me. I want to share it with you guys, too! It is a fast, simple crochet project. What I like to call...instant gratification. Like one of those chocolate cake mugs!

Hopefully, this easy to follow video can be of additional help while you are making these gloves.

This pattern goes really fast because it calls for bulky (size 5) weight yarn. Choose something soft and bulky. I like acrylic because it can be washed and dried while maintaining its integrity beautifully. One 3.5 ounce skein of bulky weight yarn. At this weight you should get about 110 yards.

J/6.00  mm Crochet Hook
3.5oz of Bulky Yarn
Scissors
Yarn Needle

Gauge: 4" x 4" Square is 12 stitches wide and 7 1/2 rows tall.

Glove Uncuffed is 10" long and 4" wide

Note:At the end of each row "chain one loosely and turn" is implied unless told otherwise.

This is for a medium set of gloves. If you want larger then add an additional 2 rows of HDC. I had enough yarn leftover from the 3.5 oz to do this so you should not need to buy more.

Create the Body of your Gloves

Chain 27,
Row 1 HDC in third chain from the hook. HDC in each stitch across (25)
Row 2-15 HDC in each stitch across (25)
Turn your work and single crochet one time into the side of each row (15-19),

Sew up the sides of your gloves

Fold your work in half, right sides together.
"Sew" them together with a single crochet in the first 5 stitches.

(what we do next with form the thumb hole)
Single Crochet in the next five stitches on only one side of the glove (not sewing the two layers together.
Then proceed to sew the glove together with single crochet stitches in the last 15 stitches
Fasten off.
Turn the glove right side out. Make a two inch cuff on the bottom of the glove and enjoy!

Repeat the pattern for a second glove.

Let me know if you have any questions?

These are very versatile. They can be adorned with bows, buttons, ribbons...the possibilities are endless. Tag me on social media so that I can see them if you make them.

Thank you for joining me and I hope that you stay warm and joyful.

Make My Own Laundry Detergent

I love to keep busy and when I found out that I was stuck at home because I sent all of the cards off to work with my husband this morning I felt a little stuck. My to-do list was centered outside of the home. But, it turned into a really nice homebody kind of day!

I made detergent...

I adapted a simple recipe after making Mama Duggars recipe a few times. By adapted I mean that I have pushed the bill making it lazier and lazier each time. I am just waiting for this recipe to fail somehow because of my laziness. But no...as laidback as I have gotten about it the stuff just keeps impressing me with its cleaning abilities and fresh scent. I use the same amount of it as I would any other detergent. I fill it to the line on the cap.

Stock Pot
6 c water
1/4 of a bar of Fels Naptha grated as small as your grater will grate.  (Walmart)
1/2 c of borax (Walmart)
1/2 c Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (I have seen it at some Walmarts...but I have to go to Ace Hardware for mine locally. Fortunately that box has lasted for over a year of making this recipe)
About 3 large empty detergent bottles
Warm Tap Water to fill up the bottles after you have added your detergent concentrate.

Put the water in the pot, turn on the heat medium/high. Add the grated soap. Stir until the soap is dissolved. Let it come almost to a boil. Turn off the heat. Add the borax and the washing soda to the pot and stir until it is mixed.

I then add it to my bottles using a glass measuring cup.

Top off the bottles with warm water straight from the tap. Replace the cap and give it a little shake to mix. Ready to use!

Some tips I have learned along the way...

1) I keep my bar of Fels Naptha out of the bag and package...the more dried out the get the easier it is to grate.

2) Saving money is great...but we use this because it is the best detergent I have found on my husbands CRAZY dirty work clothes. It doesn't get them back to perfect, but its the best they have come out.

3) I don't let it cure. And my detergent can be lumpy. But, the lumps have never given me an issue. But, *whines* the curing took over a day.

4) Give the detergent a little shake before you add it to your washer.

5) Some people use a bucket. I found it messy and the ladel kept slipping to the bottom of the bucket. Lots of dripping. I really love having my old detergent bottles to refill with this recipe. It makes ALOT.

6) We have the largest washer and at full capacity I still just use a cap full like I would regular detergent. Works fine.

7) We love the smell of this stuff! Without anything added. Felz Naptha is very pleasant and clean smelling. Not flowery, manly, musky, springy...just nice and clean.

8) If you are looking for a laundry booster for tougher than average load...just adding some Borax is a GREAT idea.

Ninja Kitty approves of the detergent 100%. She has been asleep on this sheet in the breeze of the window all afternoon.

Then I painted! I am loving reteaching my hands how to paint! I like to find word art I love on Pinterest and copying it. Its a great way to retrain and resteady my hand! Naptime Fun!
